Understanding Psychedelics
What Are Psychedelics?
Psychedelics can produce dramatic changes in consciousness, often making experience feel more open, fluid, or less centered around a fixed sense of self. For some people, these shifts offer a glimpse of perspectives that are difficult to access in ordinary states of mind.
In Waking Up, psychedelics are discussed as one way people sometimes encounter these changes. They’re not presented as a path to follow or a substitute for meditation, but as experiences that can raise important questions about perception, identity, and suffering—questions that meditation is designed to explore more gradually and reliably.
Psychedelics can reveal that familiar ways of thinking and feeling are not as fixed as they seem, and that relief from suffering and a deeper sense of connection are possible, even when they have been elusive in the past.
At the same time, these experiences work by strongly altering what’s happening in consciousness. Without reflection or integration, it’s easy to mistake intensity for insight—or to assume that a powerful experience will automatically lead to lasting change. Understanding what these experiences mean, and what they don’t, matters as much as having
had them.A common misunderstanding is treating meditation as a way to recreate unusual states first encountered through psychedelics. Meditation is not about making experience more vivid or extraordinary, but about noticing what is already present, even in ordinary moments.
Another misconception is that psychedelics are shortcuts to wisdom. While they can point toward some of the same insights that meditation reveals, they don’t replace the process of understanding how the mind operates day to day. Without care, the pursuit of peak experiences can become another form of distraction.
Waking Up focuses on helping people make sense of psychedelic experiences, rather than promoting them. Through conversations with researchers, clinicians, and contemplative teachers, the app explores what these experiences can illuminate—and where their limits lie.
Meditation offers a complementary path: a way to examine perception, thought, and identity directly, without relying on dramatic shifts in consciousness. This approach prioritizes clarity and integration, helping insights translate into everyday life.
